We are all ‘abeed ( عبيد ) of Allah
The Arabic words “abeed” عبيد, “abd”عبد , and “abdah” عبدة are commonly used in reference to the Black race. This is a horrible racial slur that degrades a group of people based on a hurtful past of systematic and heart-breaking enslavement.
On the other hand, the word “abeed” is used beautifully in the Quran by Allah to refer to His worshippers. In chapter 50 (Suratul Qaf) , verse 29 Allah says:
“…وَمَا أَنَا بِظَلَّامٍ لِّلْعَبِيدِ”
“…and I am not unjust to My slaves”
This word “abeed” is a term that encompasses all of those who strive to worship Allah, an honorable way of life. Instead, some use this word to marginalize and insult others, stripping the word of its beauty and dignity.
Lets break the link between “Abeed” and the black race. Let’s ALL strive to be ‘abeed to the One whom we dedicate our lives to. Let’s claim that “I am an ‘abd” because “We are all ‘abeed of Allah”. Learn how you can be part of the campaign to end the use of the word “abeed” in reference to the black race.
